2026 College Graduation Ceremony Setup for William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa

When William Penn University held its 2026 graduation ceremony, the goal was clear: create a dignified, comfortable, and visually stunning environment worthy of the milestone. The chosen venue — a spacious multi-purpose athletic facility — offered the scale needed for a large graduating class, proud families, faculty, and guests. However, transforming a raw gym or fieldhouse floor into a polished, fully functional ceremony space required precise planning, high-quality equipment, and an experienced rental partner who understood both logistics and the emotional weight of the day.

That partner was Big Ten Rentals. Here’s how we helped bring the vision to life with a 20′ x 40′ stage with rail, 1,450 black chairs, and four 45′ towable bleachers — delivering a setup that looked as impressive in person as it does in the breathtaking aerial photo above.

Understanding the Unique Demands of a University Graduation

College graduations are unlike other events. They combine formal processionals, lengthy seated programs, speeches, diploma presentations, photography, and the movement of hundreds (or thousands) of people in academic regalia. Key considerations include:

  • Clear sightlines for every guest
  • Safe, elevated space for speakers and dignitaries
  • Comfortable, uniform seating that photographs beautifully
  • Efficient crowd flow with wide aisles
  • Quick installation and removal to minimize disruption to the venue’s normal use
  • Compliance with safety standards (especially important for elevated platforms and tiered seating)

The Equipment: Purpose-Built for Ceremony Impact

  • 20′ x 40′ Stage with Safety Rail: A 20-by-40-foot platform is substantial — large enough for a full speaker lineup, podium, floral arrangements, and still has room for movement. The integrated safety railings provided peace of mind for university officials and speakers while maintaining a clean, professional appearance. Positioned at the focal point of the room (visible at the bottom of the aerial shot), the stage anchored the entire layout and gave graduates a clear destination during the processional.
  • 1,450 Black Chairs: We supplied 1,450 matching black chairs arranged in precise rows with a prominent center aisle. The uniform black color created a striking visual contrast against the colorful academic gowns and the venue’s flooring. Beyond aesthetics, these chairs were chosen for comfort during what can be a long ceremony and for their stackable, easy-to-handle design that allowed our crew to achieve perfectly straight lines quickly. The result is the orderly, sea-of-gowns effect captured so beautifully in the wide shot.
  • Four 45′ Towable Bleachers: Tiered seating dramatically improves the guest experience. Each 45-foot towable bleacher unit delivers multiple rows of elevated seats, giving families and friends far better views than floor-level chairs alone. Because they are towable, we could deliver them efficiently, position them exactly where needed (often along the sides or rear to complement permanent seating), and remove them with minimal floor impact. These units added significant capacity while keeping the overall footprint flexible — a major advantage in multi-use venues.

The Setup Process: Precision, Safety, and Teamwork

Our crew executed a coordinated, multi-phase installation:

  • Delivery & Positioning — The towable bleachers arrived ready to roll into their final locations. The modular stage was assembled on-site with careful attention to leveling and anchoring.
  • Layout Execution — Using the pre-planned design, we created the wide central aisle you see in the photo, ensuring smooth processional flow and emergency access. Chairs were placed with consistent spacing and perfect alignment.
  • Safety & Compliance — Every railing was inspected, bleacher units were secured per manufacturer guidelines, and clear pathways were maintained. We worked closely with university safety and facilities teams.
  • Final Detailing — Stage skirting, potted plants, and any last-minute adjustments were completed so the space felt celebratory and complete before guests arrived.

The entire transformation was efficient, allowing university staff to focus on the program, speakers, and graduates rather than on logistics.

The Result: A Ceremony That Looked as Good as It Felt

The aerial photograph tells the story better than words ever could. From the packed rows of graduates in caps and gowns, to the filled bleachers and additional seating, to the dramatic lighting and the proud atmosphere — every element worked together. Guests enjoyed clear views from the tiered bleachers, speakers had a commanding presence on the large stage, and the university presented a polished, memorable experience.

Events of this scale succeed when every detail is considered. Big Ten Rentals didn’t just drop off equipment; we partnered with William Penn University to design and deliver a complete seating and staging solution tailored to their space, their numbers, and their standards.
